Consignments

Hi folks, this is Joe again, writing to you in the late-night hours after a very productive day of business. This past week introduces some designs of holiday themed items and, as with the jewelry collection, are a combination of 3D printed pieces and hand craft work. Before we upload them to one of our newly created portfolio showcases, on the redesigned webpage, we’ll send them to one of our local consignment shops, to gauge public reaction and sales. Below is a photo of those items we hope to consign in the next couple of weeks.

Another of our portfolios will exhibit our craft accessories including my design for a paint brush cleaning tray, which you see below.

Our new web page is near completion and may be introduced some time next week. It will include 8 portfolios of differing design applications.

We are now producing in the areas of 3D modeling, 3D printing, photography, web page design, 3D mesh design, marketing and sales. We are aiming for the middle to end of March to have these areas completed and introduction of our products for public consumption. Keep in mind that the items we offer are not the limitations of our production. First and foremost, we consider ourselves product designers for your needs and it is in that area that we wish to be of service. If you dream it, we will build it.

Escalating

Hi everyone. This is Joe, the owner and operator of advanc3Design. I’ve returned to this week’s blog to give you some updates on recent events. My thanks to my European associates for writing the last few blogs, and giving me some much needed time to concentrate on other aspects of this business. The past three weeks allowed me the time to develop and train my new aides, and establish an organized routine of design and shop work. I’ve also completed several jewelry items and photographed them to be added this website. At this writing, I’m collaborating with a web designer, and we’re improving the website and changing it in preparation for uploading the items I’ve finished. I hope to have twelve items for the initial offerings, with the remaining twelve to be added in the following weeks. Discussions with my designers have led us to plan for the inclusion of additional product lines, which will be evident as added portfolios on the new website. We’ve already completed some items for these portfolios, but those await scheduling by our photographer before we can add them accordingly. We’ve also acquired a new software application which allows us to photograph our hand-sculpted, or assembled, objects and convert them to wire-mesh format which can then be loaded to our 3D printer for  duplication and multiple copies.

We had a setback a couple of weeks ago with our 3D printer. We lost a week of downtime while we worked with the maker’s support team to diagnose and correct some software glitches that caused some synchronization issues with the moving parts. Specifically, the wiper arm was moving too fast and striking the build platform before it could rise out of the way. This caused a “jammed motor” error, and took two technicians over a week to diagnose and direct repairs. All is well now and we’re back on track. We also upgraded our I.T. service to a fiber optic system which now gives us more reliable speeds and connectivity to our support platforms across the web. We hope that these improvements will allow us to speed up all aspects of the business.

Getting Started

It’s Mimi again, the social media manager from Germany. Today is Friday, so it’s time for a new blog post.

In my last blog I talked about the book “The Art Of The Start” by Guy Kawasaki. I told you about the first two steps when founding a new organization: Making meaning and making a mantra. I also shared the results of our company with you. So if you haven’t read this blog yet, feel free to take a look at it.

In this blog I want to go further and tell you the next step to go on your way to becoming an entrepreneur.

It is: Getting started! Or to say it with Guy Kawasaki’s words: Get going!

“What you should do is (a) rein in your anal tendency to craft a document and (b) implement. This means building a prototype, writing software, launching your Web site, or offering your services. The hardest thing about getting started is getting started. (…) Remember: No one ever achieved success by planning for gold.”

This is the reason why we launched our Web site last year, even though we haven’t started selling our products yet. We give you an update every week and want you to be part of our origination process. You learn about our successes, but also about our failures – on the way to start a business, there are always backstrokes, but the art is to never give up, no matter how rocky the road of life is.

So far, you find only pictures of jewelry on our homepage. But we want to point out, that we are willing to produce any design that you have in mind. We are here to turn your idea into a well-designed product. So if there is something we can do for you, don’t hestitate to contact us.

Make Meaning And A Mantra

It’s me again, Mimi, the social media manager from good old Germany. 🙂 I’m happy to write another blog for this company. And this time I have good news: People started to interact with us on Twitter. I’m really glad about this development and I am very optimistic that we’ll have even more interactions in the future.

I have continued reading the book “The Art Of The Start” by Guy Kawasaki and I’m surprised about how wonderful it is. I mean, it’s so inspiring and motivating. I must admit, that I still didn’t get far. I’m still in the first chapter, but it’s only because it made me think a lot. I thought about my future, thought about WHAT it is that I want to create, that I want to offer to the world and that I want to make my money with.

I don’t know if you have already been told, but it’s my dream to sell the books I’ve written and living from it sooner or later. There are other things, that I want to do, too. Professional blogging and social media management, for example. But primarily, I consider myself a writer. I have written several novels, novellas and short stories and I’m currently working on new projects and editing the old ones to make them ready for publishing.

In the beginning of the first chapter, Guy Kawasaki lists five things, entrepreneurs-to-be should consider:

  1. Make Meaning
  2. Make Mantra
  3. Get Going
  4. Define Your Business Model
  5. Weave A Mat (Milestones, Assumptions, And Tasks)

In this blog I’d like to elaborate on the first and second point.

The first point is to “Make Meaning”.  The author asks a simple question. It’s very simple, yes, but it took me HOURS to find an answer. The question is:

“If your organization never existed, the world would be worse off because … ?”

Guy Kawasaki writes:

“Meaning is not about money, power, or prestige. It’s not even about creating a fun place to work. Among the meanings of “meaning” are to

  • Make the world a better place.
  • Increase the quality of life.
  • Right a terrible wrong.
  • Prevent the end of something good.

Goals such as these are a tremendous advantage as you travel down the difficult path ahead. If you answer this question in the negative, you may still be successful, but it will be harder to become so because making meaning is the most powerful motivator there is.”

I thought really long about this question. What meaning has my work for the world? Why would my stories make it a better place? I must confess, I still didn’t find a satisfying answer. So far, I think that the world would be worse off because it makes people forget their complicated lives for a moment. How does that sound?

For advanc3Design we found the following answer: If our organization never existed, the world would be worse off because nobody would design the piece of their dreams.

Then the second point was “Make Mantra”. Kawasaki suggests to think of a mantra, a kind of short sentence or phrase that summarizes the mission of the organization. As an example, he mentioned “Fun family entertainment” for Disney. Before you ask – no, a mantra is not a tag line. A tag line is there to hook the customer, to make him interested in a product and buy it. The mantra is there to motivate the employees. That’s the big difference.

I found a mantra for my writing: “Dream and create“. With only three words it’s very short and catchy. It cuts right the chase of the matter. What I want to say with this mantra is, that my best story ideas come from my dreams. Dreaming has become part of my job. And after I dreamt of a great detail, a character or a setting, I create something new from it and turn it into a story.

For advanc3Design we found the mantra: “One design at a time“. It implies our dedication and personal service to each customer and their design idea. I find this mantra very beautiful. It’s easy to remember and perfectly describes our business idea.
